Who we are:

Fellowship of the Wheel (FOTW) is a non-profit that advocates for and maintains 100+ miles of public multi-use trails at several networks in Chittenden County, VT. We work with private and municipal landowners to create responsibly-built, sustainable trails for the greater community to enjoy their surrounding environment through recreation. SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Trail Crew works under the direction of the Trails Manager to keep 100+ miles of multi-use trails safe and accessible. This is a technical field position combined with supporting volunteers of all backgrounds and ability levels on our trail days. The Trail Crew works independently and collaboratively with staff to perform trail maintenance, repair and new construction from April through October. The ability to change priorities daily to address damage from weather events or unforeseen maintenance needs across 8 networks should be expected.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Trail Maintenance and Repair | 90% Time

  • Assess trail conditions, prioritize, and carry out trail maintenance and repair of FOTW’s networks. 
  • Perform the maintenance and repair annual cycle of drain clearing, tread repair, leaf and debris removal; new trail construction; rock work and bridge construction; and trail decommissioning
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment, including hand tools, small power tools, chainsaws, and wheelbarrows
  • Assist with natural area restoration work as needed, including invasive species removal

Volunteer Mentor and Training| 10% Time

Support Community and Corporate Volunteer work events:

  • Assist Trails Manager in preparing and leading regularly occurring volunteer work events ranging in size from 5 – 25 volunteers
  • Provide education and training to volunteers to execute trail improvements with safety and forest ecology at the forefront

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to comfortably lift 50 lbs. and traverse uneven terrain for 6 continuous hours, 4-5 days per week
  • Enthusiasm for working outdoors during changing seasons and weather conditions in a forested trail setting
  • Reliable access to transportation
  • Experience with workplace safety practices
  • Experience working with volunteers, members of the public, or public agencies
  • Proficient with smartphone, GPS devices, and cameras

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient with hand tools and small power equipment
  • Chainsaw operation experience and certification
  • 1+ years field experience of trail maintenance or conservation work 
  • First Aid/CPR/AED or Wilderness First Aid or WFR
  • Knowledgeable about forest ecology and watershed sensitivity
  • Knowledgeable about trail design, construction, and maintenance

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Compensation: $15-$22/hour
