Aug 10, 2008 Trail Day - Johnny Brook Trail

On Sunday August 10th there will be a second chance to help the Trails Committtee complete the Johnnie Brook Trail where it joins Huntington Road!

Last weekend saw ten volunteers assembling more than 100 feet of boardwalk.
This represents about half of the work needed to open the final trail section at the Huntington Road end.

On Sunday 10th August (9:00 am start) we plan to do ditching, culvert, leveling and gravel-laying work on the final section of this part of the trail.

Please join us! Bring workboots, work gloves, water bottle, sun protection, bug repellent, and snacks. Also, helpful to bring a shovel.

Remember there is minimal parking at the worksite. Thanks to the Farrs, some parking is possible at their farm nearby on the opposite side of Huntington Road. Share rides if possible. Otherwise walk or come by bike.

Aug 23, 2008 2008 Burlington Bay to Breakwaters Century

When: 8:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008
Where: Burlington to Port Kent Ferry, Perkins Pier, Burlington VT
Route: Pork Kent, NY south to the Champlain Bridge, then north back to Burlington.

Last year 45 riders gathered, through word of mouth, for one of the most enjoyable group rides of the season. The Burlington Bay to Breakwaters Century begins at 8:00 am on the Burlington to Port Kent ferry and travels south along the hilly and scenic NY shore. After crossing the Champlain Bridge at historic Crown Point, the ride turns north and travels through the quiet roads of Addison County and finishes back at Perkins Pier. Cold beer and food at Breakwaters Cafe make for a terrific ending.

The ride is FREE and basically unsupported. Riders pay for one-way ferry tickets, and there are numerous convenience stores along the way. Given the size of the group and the number of flats last year, we will be adding a volunteer support vehicle to follow the group.

Also new this year, I am asking all riders to consider a voluntary donation of at least $20 to support the extraordinary trail building efforts of the Fellowship of the Wheel. All of you mountain bikers ask yourself what the local mountain biking would be like with out the FOTW.

Click on "Join" in the top navigation today and make your donation. Or we can sign you up on the ferry. Riders of all abilities are welcome. Please spread the word!

This event is being organized by Jim Kelley.
